How to calculate your profit on Etsy
- Add up what the buyer pays: the item price, the shipping they pay and any gift wrap fee.
- Subtract Etsy’s fees: the listing fee, the transaction fee, payment processing for your country and, where they apply, currency conversion, the regulatory operating fee, Offsite Ads and, if you haven’t given Etsy a VAT number, the VAT added to the fees.
- Subtract your own costs: materials and labor, the real postage, packaging and any Etsy Ads spend.
- What is left is your net profit. Divide it by what the buyer paid to get your margin.
- For your break-even price, lower the price until net profit reaches zero; for a target margin, raise it until the margin is met. The calculator above does both for you.
Worked example
A US seller lists a mug for $25.00 and charges $5.00 shipping; the buyer pays $30.00. Etsy fees: listing $0.20, transaction $1.95, payment processing $1.15; $3.30 in total. Their own costs are $14.00. Net profit is $12.70, a 42.33% margin. The break-even price is $10.97.

Rules and sources
- Fees come from Etsy’s own pages (linked on this page) and were checked on the date above. Etsy can change them at any time; those pages are always the source of truth.
- The listing fee is counted once per sale (it is charged when a listing is created and on each renewal). Editing a listing is free.
- Payment processing is a percentage of the total the buyer pays (tax included) plus a fixed amount and depends on the country of your bank account. Canada and Australia charge a higher percentage on international orders. If you enter the tax the buyer pays, the percentage applies to it too; the base of the other fees is the price, shipping and gift wrap.
- If you haven’t given Etsy a VAT number, Etsy adds VAT to your fees (VAT in the UK, EU, Türkiye and Australia; GST/HST in Canada); with a number it doesn’t. The rate is the country’s standard rate and applies to the sum of the fees; in Canada the rate varies by province, so you enter it. Rates and their sources are in the table and the source list above, with dates.
- A 2.5% currency conversion fee applies when your listing currency differs from your payment account currency. The payment account currency is assumed to be the currency of your country’s fixed fee.
- Every fee is rounded to the nearest cent on its own and the total is their sum. Etsy doesn’t publish how it rounds, so a real order can differ by a cent or two.
- Sales tax isn’t calculated: enter the price without tax. If you know the tax the buyer pays, enter it in its own field; it only counts toward the payment processing percentage and stays fixed when the price changes. This isn’t tax advice.
Frequently asked
How do I calculate profit on Etsy?
Take what the buyer pays (item + shipping + gift wrap) and subtract Etsy’s fees and your own costs (item, real shipping, packaging, ads). What is left is your net profit; divide it by what the buyer paid for your margin.
What fees does Etsy charge?
A $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on item price, shipping and gift wrap, and a payment processing fee that depends on your bank country. Some countries add a regulatory operating fee; 2.5% currency conversion applies when currencies differ, and Offsite Ads are charged only when a sale comes through that advertising.
Does Etsy add VAT to its fees?
For UK, EU, Turkish and Australian sellers who haven’t given Etsy a VAT number, Etsy adds VAT to the fees; in Canada it adds GST/HST. Choose “Yes” under “I gave Etsy my VAT number” and this line drops out. The rate is the country’s standard rate. Etsy’s help article doesn’t list US sellers, so the tool adds no VAT for the US.
When does Etsy charge Offsite Ads fees?
Only when a buyer clicks one of Etsy’s offsite ads for your listing and orders from your shop within 30 days. The fee is 15%, or 12% once your shop has reached $10,000 in sales, capped at $100 per order. Etsy decides whether a sale is charged; this tool adds the fee only when you choose “Yes” in the Offsite Ads field.
Why does the currency matter?
If you list in a currency other than your payment account’s, Etsy charges 2.5% of the sale amount to convert it. Listing in your payment account currency avoids that fee.
Does it work for Turkish sellers?
Yes. Pick Türkiye as the seller country; the fixed processing fee is in Turkish lira, so you enter an exchange rate once.
